about

I wrote this tune based on the story told by Levon Helm in The Last Waltz about the midnight rambles he attended in his youth.

lyrics

I remember sneaking out to the Wilcox Mistral Show
I couldn't have been more than 13 I wasn't allowed but I just had to go
so I made my way through the cold dark woods until I could hear the band
I held my breath I opened the door praying lord help me if you can

It was a midnight ramble
Everybody came to get down
Midnight ramble
Every last person in the whole damn town
Was shaking and singing and stomping their feet
It weren't like nothing
it was a midnight ramble
And I was only 13

I walked on into the room and my eyes started to burn
There were people laughing and smoking and drinking just about everywhere I turned
The man playing guitar well he knew how to bend them strings
That whole band had whole room jumping from the floor up to the beams

It was a midnight ramble
everybody came to get down
midnight ramble
Every last person in the whole damn town
Was shaking and singing and loosing their minds
but after all it was Saturday night
At the midnight ramble
And I was feeling just fine

There was Levon a boy from school trying to catch my eye
I didn't know just what to do but I told myself this ain't no time to be shy
So I took his hand and he pulled me close and we started to groove
In the back of my mind I heard my mama say, you know damn well this ain't what good girls do

At the midnight ramble
Everybody came to get down
Midnight ramble
Every damn person in the whole damn town
was shaking and singing and speaking in tongues
and it wasn't over till we saw the sun
At the midnight ramble
I learned how to have fun

Now that was many years ago i have since grown and moved away
but I still think about that little old shack in the woods to this very day
I make my living singing these songs tryin to get the people to dance
but you know where'd I be in a red hot minute if I had the chance

I'd go to the midnight ramble
Where everybody came to get down
Midnight ramble
Every damn person in the whole damn town
was shaking and singing and going buck wild
and you couldn't stop it even if you tried
it was a midnight ramble
And I was just a child
